Interdisciplinary Study Days

Biodiversity. Concept and Value

March 21-26, 2011 in Bonn

The concept of biodiversity describes the variation of life forms and its environment. It indicates the diversity of genes, species and ecosystems in general. The conservation of biodiversity is subject of numerous international biopolitical regulations, even though the value of nature and its components is controversial. Can we attribute an intrinsic value to biodiversity or is it just an economical good?

The participants of the Study Days will discuss these and other questions from biological, philosophical, theological, legal and economical perspectives. Supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and in collaboration with the Institute of Science and Ethics (IWE) the German Reference Centre for Ethics in the Life Sciences (DRZE) hosts Interdisciplinary Study Days with European Junior Scientists. Participants (postdoc level, doctoral students) from medicine, the natural sciences, the social sciences, philosophy, theology, economics or law will have the opportunity for an intensive mutual exchange and discussions with experts. In case of acceptance of an abstract, accommodation and travel expenses will be reimbursed.

Successful applicants will present their work in short talks and have the opportunity to discuss the paper. After the study days participants have to submit their presentation as a manuscript for publication and will receive a remuneration of €300.
