Assisted Suicide in France

The case of the severely ill cancer patient Chantal Sébire and her request for assisted suicide sparked the debate about a legal exemption from punishment in the case of assisted suicide in late. The proposed draft law for legal exemption from punishment in case of assisted suicide under particular conditions of facts of the case by the socialists which was presented on November 24th, 2009, was rejected in the national assembly by the conservative majority of UMP ("Union pour un mouvement populaire") and NC ("Nouveau Centre", as of 2018 called "Les Centristes"). Therefore, the rules of the “loi n° 2005-370 relative aux droits des maladies et à la fin de vie” still apply.
