The main thesis of the text is this: Human self-determination is subject to a standard that is equally valid for every person. This Kantian thought connects autonomy and ethics. The moralized understanding of autonomy stands in opposition to individualistic notions which can be found in medical ethics. The book presents both ethical as well as conceptual reasons for this understanding.
