Transgenes

The ambiguous term "transgene" primarily refers to a gene that has been transferred from one species to another by a suitable gene construct. Additionally, plants, animals or microorganisms in whose genome the gene of another species has been introduced are called transgenic (e.g. "transgenic plants"). Lastly, organisms whose genome was already modified in the early embryonic stage can also be covered by this term.
